Earlier today, law enforcement released the name of the Century High School student who died in a tragic car accident on Saturday, October 7th. As a result, we are now able to send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Davin Tukua. I did not have the opportunity to meet or get to know Davin, but over the past two days, I have heard from teachers, coaches, students, and others that he was a wonderful young man. He was unfailingly kind and always ready to help complete a project or assist someone in need. He was a talented athlete who was a valued member of the football and swim teams at Century High School. I have heard from his coaches that he was a hard worker who always came ready to play, never complained, and would play any position or swim any stroke that would help his team compete and win. He also loved skiing and snowboarding and I'm told he was really good at both. I know that all members of the Rochester Public Schools community send our deepest sympathies to Davin's family and friends during this difficult time. We cannot understand or even imagine what you are thinking and feeling right now, but we want you to know that Davin's tragic loss has broken a part of our hearts as well. We will keep you in our thoughts during the time of grief, remembering, and transition that lies ahead. Sincerely, Kent Pekel Superintendent

What is a Community School? A community school is both a place and a set of collective partnerships between Rochester Public Schools, United Way of Olmsted County, an individual school, and other community resources. Its integrated focus on academics, health, social services, youth and community development, and community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families, and healthier communities. A full-service community school has components engaging instructions, expanded learning opportunities; college, career, and citizenship; health and social support; community engagement; early childhood development; family engagement; and youth development.
Meet Intisar Khan, Community School Site Facilitator at Franklin Elementary School! Instisar completed her bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Florida International University, received an ESOL endorsement, and recently completed her Master’s degree in School Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. She taught for eight years across three states, where she worked with diverse communities to enhance learning opportunities for all children. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and exploring the outdoors. Though she’s just starting her first year, we’re very excited to have her join the RPS Community Schools team!

RPS Community School Site Facilitator Appreciation Week - Meet Intistar Khan, Why were you interested in becoming a community school facilitator? The community school model is of interest to me due to its focus on educating the whole child. In addition to strong academics, community schools focus on the physical, emotional, and social well-being of students, recognizing that these factors can affect a student’s ability to learn and succeed. Providing these holistic supports and resources students need in specific communities helps address disparities in resources and opportunities.
This year, thanks to the Free School Meals Program, all students attending RPS in person are able to receive one breakfast and one lunch at no cost each school day! Today, Governor Tim Walz, Minnesota Department of Education's Commissioner Willie Jett, and Minnesota's First Lady Gwen Walz visited Franklin & Montessori at Franklin Elementary School - Rochester, MN to help celebrate this initiative. As we wrap up this long weekend, we wanted to remind students of the importance of safety, especially as you walk or ride your bike or scooter to school. We made a video with the Rochester Police Department with a few reminders: https://youtu.be/x1kYWW081ng?si=K7MJQdDL3Jz_ybxv
