Public Schools Week highlight

This week, we’re celebrating National Public Schools Week and highlighting various roles that help our schools run smoothly and efficiently.

Louisa vacuumingToday, we’re spotlighting Louisa, a night custodian at Kellogg Middle School.

How long have you worked at RPS?

I have worked for Rochester Schools for six months.

Why did you apply to work for RPS?

I applied to Rochester because I was working in the custodial job position as a lead in a neighboring school district and really needed a change. I wanted to learn more and also have more choices to work with different age groups, and the smaller schools do not offer that.

What's your favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing about my job is the kids, and I also really enjoy my coworkers. I was happy I got to return to evenings because I started out as an evening custodian and enjoyed it.

What's something you wish people knew about your job as a custodian?

People need to know that the best way to learn how to enjoy your job is to take some pride in your work area. As custodians, we also encounter some huge messes, and the job never ends. Even when no kids are here, there is always something to do; that is when the real work begins!

Thank you to Louisa and all of our custodians across the district who create environments where students can feel safe at school and contribute to the growth and success of our students and schools.
